Princess cut (square) are next in value and fancy shape diamonds such as oval, pear, marquise, and heart shape diamonds are worth much less since the demand for these shapes is much lower.

Your diamond will be worth more if it is certified:

Diamonds can be certified by independent labs to give specific information about a stones cut, color, clarity, and carat weight that is guaranteed to be accurate and gives buyers comfort in knowing what they are buying. These certifications will add value to your diamond and increase the price that the stone can be sold for. There are a few main companies that certify diamonds; GIA, EGL, and IGI are the main ones you will see.

GIA certified diamonds are MUCH MORE desirable because they are more strict in their grading process. Cook County Diamond Buyers will pay more for a GIA certified diamond than any other certified diamond.

The Facts about Diamond Values That Others Won’t tell you:

Small diamonds are not worth as much as you might expect, just because they are real diamonds doesn't mean they are worth a lot of money. Jewelers can often buy small diamonds wholesale for $100 per carat. So if you have a 1 carat diamond bracelet with a bunch of small stones in it, figure the diamonds might be worth about $100. (Quality will affect the price somewhat)

Large single stones command the most value however, the secondhand market for diamonds usually only brings about 20-30% of the retail cost of a diamond. So this means if you bought a diamond from a traditional jewelry store for $5000, you might expect to get $1000 back for it. If it is a higher quality diamond certified by GIA, the price would be about $1500.M

This may sound bad to you but if you shop around, you will see that it’s true. Most buyers will not disclose these facts about the secondhand market for diamonds but I prefer full disclosure to avoid surprises.
